Herbs
for your circulation: Exploring
problems with veins. Family Herbalist.
pp. 29. by Theiss, B. (1988) It’s interesting that most people usually feel better in summer than in winter. There are not many cases of the “blahs” during the warm sunny months and, in general, people experience less pain and have fewer complaints. However, there are a few instances of health problems which become worse as the temperature rises. Such is the case with venous congestion, varicose veins and phlebitis (inflammation of a vein or veins). Anyone whose job involves hours of being on their feet and women who are in the last months of pregnancy, know that your legs begin to hurt as the day gets warmer and warmer. This hot and heavy, tense sensation in the upper part of the leg can be a real problem. When the veins become overly dilated and the venous valves (which work like flood gates or locks, transporting the blood upwards against the force of gravity) no longer properly close, the blood remains in the lower leg. As a consequence, your legs and feet become swollen and are extremely sensitive to external pressure, such as tight fitting shoes or elastic stockings. When this condition continues over time and venous dilation becomes chronic, both the large and small veins loose their elasticity and tone. This is what is commonly called “varicose veins”. Although we notice them most when they appear on the surface of the leg, they can also occur beneath the skin as well. Some people have an inherited tendency for “tissue softening” and they are particularly prone to weakening of the veins. This predisposition is enhanced by years of being overweight, a sedentary lifestyle and/or improper nutrition. A good natural diet and regular exercise, such as walking, jogging, bicycle riding, hiking, swimming, etc., can do much to alleviate this problem. This condition can become quite serious when it is accompanied by a general hardening (sclerosing) of the blood vessels. The more the problem deteriorates, the greater the danger of thrombosis and embolism. When this happens, the blood becomes congested along the brittle, in-elastic inner walls of a vein or artery, which results in the formation of a blood clot. If this clot is loosened and begins to travel through the blood stream, it may become lodged in a vital organ such as the heart or lungs. This complication is a serious concern when dealing with problems of venous congestion. There are a number of very simple natural healing remedies which can be recommended for preventing and treating these symptoms. When symptoms of congestion are appearing infrequently, such as during long trips or after spending the day on your feet at an art exhibit, etc., you should shower your legs from the knee down-first with warm water followed by cold-and then massage your legs with Classic Marigold Ointment from NatureWorks. When you’re through, sit down and rest with your legs elevated. Do this for 20 minutes or longer. Natural stimulation, such as treading water, walking in grass wet with dew, and alternating hot-cold foot baths to which you add rosemary tea are excellent methods for preventing further deterioration. Along with exercise, these are the best ways to restore tone and tautening of the tissues and for promoting enhanced blood flow. Rubbing your legs with rosemary essence is also very good and is a most refreshing “pick-me-up. Classic Marigold Ointment is superb for treating varicose veins all by itself. Rub your legs regularly every morning and evening with the ointment. The rubbing helps stimulate your circulation and muscle tone, and the rich, buttery consistency of the ointment is ideal for moisturizing the skin, alleviating dry or flaky skin and keeping your legs soft yet elastic. Clinical tests of this ointment in preventing bed-sores for hospital patients not only revealed its ability to transport anti-inflammatory substances (carotinoids) of the marigold (Calendula officinalis) blossoms deep into the layers of tissue, but also to improve circulation at the same time. The healing and pain relieving effect of Classic Marigold Ointment has been confirmed again and again by untold numbers of relieved patients. This therapy can be accompanied by wearing support stockings; however, this is not the most comfortable thing in hot weather. Edema formation (retention of fluids) in the legs and feet should be countered by drinking diuretic teas. These cause the excess fluids in the body to be excreted. Stinging Nettle Tea, Horsetail Tea and Small-Flowered Willow herb Tea are all excellent for this purpose. One Important Caution: When fluid retention is due to functional cardiac or kidney disorders, rather than weakening of the blood vessels, diuretic teas will not alleviate the problem and are not recommended. In more advanced cases of varicose veins, and in instances of venous inflammation (phlebitis) in particular, I have seen excellent results in administering Marigold Ointment in conjunction with Swedish Bitters as an external, cooling compress. This enhances the inflammation-inhibiting effect of the ointment considerably. Simply cover the area with a thick layer of Marigold Ointment, then apply a compress that has been soaked with Swedish bitters right on top of the same area. Covering this with a light towel and a simple bandage wrap will allow you to keep it on for hours or even overnight. Again apply the Marigold Ointment to the entire area immediately after removing the compress. In Europe, Marigold Ointment is known as a universal healing treatment for skin problems of every kind, especially for caring for extremely dry, chafed or raw skin. It is the ointment of choice for baby’s bottom as well! NatureWorks also offers Marigold Cream for people who prefer more of a moisturizing action with a less “greasy” feel. Marigold cream contains the same skin care extracts and anti-inflammatory substances as the ointment; however it is more “cosmetic” in nature. Both Marigold Ointment and Marigold Cream are completely natural and made from NatureWorks superior quality herbs. If you are interested in learning more about the extraordinary power of marigold (calendula), I recommend reading about it in our book The Family Herbal. By the way, it’s very easy to grow in your garden and even does quite well in flower pots too.
